Enjoying a cup of tea this morning, I noticed a Honduran Proverb written on the teabag: “Grief shared is half grief; Joy shared is double joy.” Knowingly, we live in a world where sometimes just when you think things are ‘good’ … the floor seemingly falls right from under you, to put it mildly! My cause of ‘keen distress’ is a story I feel compelled to share, along with encouragement by your staff to do so.
My story actually begins in the Summer of 2007 when, after over 18 years of employment with one company, I decided to lay my pen down from the work force and join my husband in retirement. The following months were focused on relaxation, enjoying our family and home, and ultimately plan for travel. By the end of that year, we were engaged in highlights of the coming year, looking forward to a trip to Hawaii with family, a cruise to Alaska, the wedding of our eldest daughter, and a one-time opportunity with a friend on a land/cruise trip to Greece. Much ado about everything, and some! Unfortunately, I never made that Greece trip, as toward the end of 2008 health matters became the forefront of our daily life which left much to be desired.
In the Fall/Winter of 2008, both my husband and I were hospitalized. The old saying “when it rains, it pours” definitely applied. Little did I know then that the turning point in our lives as retirees would be overshadowed by the string of events that would follow. Fast forward in 2008: end October left me with major surgery and three months recommended for recovery; begin November husband’s diagnoses was brain injury and possible dementia; end November/begin December, husband released from hospital/skilled nursing facility. Issues at hand: 1) my doctors/home health care nurse strongly advised against my being a caregiver at home, and 2) my husband’s doctors/social worker recommended seek care for him in a lock-down facility, i.e., Alzheimer's/Dementia provisions.
At this point, my (adult) children and I had the overwhelming task of finding answers on what to do, who to turn to, where do we go from here. We visited a number of home care facilities with much reluctance. Ten days before we knew their dad would be released from the nursing facility, they came to me and said “Mom, why not bring dad home … where he can sleep better?” At the hospital and nursing facility he was constantly wandering and not sleeping at all … sleep deprivation, a significant detriment to the healing process.
After much research and emotional strain, our decision to ‘do the right thing’ was evidently and absolutely founded with the help of Professional Health Care Services. A dear friend of mine suggested I contact an acquaintance who could refer me to someone in the home health care service sector. After one phone call to PHCS, a return call came from Chris Good rum/Corporate Secretary. The wheel started turning; within 24-hrs came a home visit from Penny Byram/Founder,CEO and Maria Alcantra/Care Consultant. They performed a quick walk-thru of my home and shared all the information I needed to know about their services. Within 48-hrs of that visit, and just two hours before my husband’s release from the nursing facility, a PHCS caregiver stood at my front door ready for orientation and assessment of my home environment. Caregivers, Noli Castro and Vivian Coronel, were assigned to our case. And, Grace Navarro/Operations Manager, always available, promptly answering questions in the following weeks to come.
I cannot begin to say how vital it was for me to acquire assistance for both my husband and myself in the timeframe given as such. However, due to Penny and Maria’s knowledge and expertise, their ability to recognize the urgency of our need made that job at hand as simple and effortless as it sounds. I honestly feel that had it not been for their kindness and willingness to come forth on such short notice, I am undoubtedly convinced that I would never have had the opportunity to truly understand the real meaning of the word, ‘caregiving’.
Our caregivers, Noli and Vivian, were absolutely wonderful! Their sensitivity to the daily demands of our circumstances, both physically and emotionally, made all the difference in the world. Their personable and caring dispositions gave us a sense of trust and joy as they communicated positive resolve during this challenging time in our life. Having them here in our home was without question beyond expectation, above and beyond what the doctors prescribed. Stealing a quote and modifying it a bit: “Our prescription for the good life is a chicken in every pot, a car in every garage, and a loving caregiver in every heart”.
Subsequently, with almost three months of physical, occupational, and speech/cognitive skills therapy, my husband is doing extraordinarily well. In fact, what seemed bleak at the time has now come down to his therapists’ observations indicating behavior not conducive to dementia, so we are very glad of that outcome. After additional minor surgery in late January of this year, and a follow up outpatient procedure just a couple of weeks ago, I am also doing very well. Needless to say, we are on the road to recovery (like the pink bunny beating on that drum that keeps going, and going, and going…!). We continue to enjoy and resume life’s blessings in retirement with our family and friends.
You can find the most thought provoking words in the most unexpected place, and timeliest of manner. This is on a tube of lotion! It reads: “Philosophy: Amazing Grace”~~How you climb up the mountain is just as important as how you get down the mountain. And so it is with life, which for many of us becomes one big gigantic test followed by one big gigantic lesson. In the end, it all comes down to one word, grace. It’s how you accept winning and losing, good luck and bad luck, the darkness and the light.”
I can wholeheartedly say that our association with PHCS has been most fulfilling and worthy of sharing this rewarding experience. My deepest appreciation and gratitude go to Penny, Maria, Chris, Grace, and lastly but not at all least, to Noli and Vivian who took our hands in theirs with compassion and goodness of heart. Most importantly and lovingly, of my children~~my Guardian Angels; we now know that bringing their dad home to familiarity, routine, positive energy, and personal contact with much love and caring, are all keys to recovery. Simply stating, I truly believe we did the ‘right thing’.

I would like to thank the entire staff of your agency for all of the help you have provided for us. Our mother has received care for nearly five years now and it has gone from general companionship to complete daily care five days a week. We are confident that, if needed and with prior notification, we could get help on weekends also.
On the days when my mom’s regular caregiver is not here, Mom would obviously misses her. On days, when substitutes are provided, Mom is happy to have them. Everyone of the caregivers is very knowledgeable, clean and professional. We can leave the house knowing Mom will be fine because she is in very capable hands.
Whenever someone asks us about her care, we proudly tell them about your agency and let them know and highly recommend you. Your agency was highly recommended to us and are we glad that we followed through and called.
Thank you for being there in our time of need. We hope to continue the relationship for as long as Mom needs help.
Sincerely,

Dear Professional Health Care Services, Inc.,
I am taking this occasion from my busy schedule because of my desire to let you know how much you are appreciated by my family and myself.
Not long ago I was in the hospital for a rather extended period, and upon my return home found it necessary to have extra care. It is such a helpless feeling! I did not know where to turn. Fortunately a friend told me about your compassionate and loving group of helpers.
I am forever grateful to have, had and still have your help. Our children were wonderful in looking out for us, but they’re all married and have families of their own for whom they are the main providers. They, my husband and I, still enjoy the special attention which you provide, and in case of emergency, know that you are there to send dependable and competent assistance.
We are all exceedingly grateful for your special services which allow us to stay in our home of may years. May God bless you abundantly.
With heartfelt appreciation,

“ Professional Health Care Services provided full-time in-home care for my husband for the last five years of his life. My husband suffered from advanced Parkinson’s disease complicated by Diffused Lewy Body Dementia. I can only say that the care my husband received was exceptionally loving and professional. His helpers were very well trained, and thy treated him with respect as well as loving care. I would recommend Professional Health Care Services and Penny Byram without reservations to anyone who is in need of in-home help for a medical condition. As a result of having these helpers in my home, I was able to enjoy the last few years with my husband without anxiety as to his care. I always knew he was in excellent hands and I was free just to be his wife and friend. ”

“ I am very glad to recommend the Professional Health Care Services. We have been using them for over four years, and have enjoyed the excellent care of our present caregiver, Reggie Ramos. For three and an half of these years he has proven to be conscientious, honest, prompt and caring and my husband has responded to this in a very positive way. In fact, Reggie is almost like a member of our family and has shared in many of our special celebrations.
Although we now have hospice, it can in no way substitute for the personal tough and warmth of our caregiver’s efforts. ”

“ My husband and I lived in New York and had a business there. We moved to California where the climate was more beneficial to us.
When I was looking for a care-giving agency to help my husband, it was important that the people be dependable, prompt, courteous, attentive and resourceful. They also had to keep my beloved husband clean, alert and interestingly occupied. I did a lot of research and found the Professional Health Care Services, Inc., owned by Penny Byram, to be the dedicated and quality caregivers who gave me and my family peace of mind. Now I require care-giving assistance and I am pleased and confident to hire the same professional agency. ”
